Kiya and Ziya
Tabassian in Concert
The two brothers Kiya and Ziya Tabassian are mostly known as the
founders of the Constantinople Ensemble (Project)
focusing on European and Middle Eastern musical traditions of
the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Their first release in Iran
(almost a decade ago) named “The hidden Bridge (Pole Penhan)
“ was a major success. A fter numerous performances worldwide and
also nine released albums in Canada, the duet went on stage
in their home country for the first time in June 2008.
Kiya (Setar) and Ziya
(Tombak and percussions) are not performers tied to the Persian Radif and rather experiment on different maqams of ancient
Persian Music. A musical taste worth to be experienced live. A
duet piece of theirs (“Awakening”) as well as “Vermiculus” (Constantinople) appeared also on a recent Hermes album named
“Clouds”.

Songlines Magazine
- Released in Iran
Although World Music is enjoying a noticeable share in the
Iranian Music Market, but information sources among this genre
of music (especially in Persian language) is hardly to find and
serious listeners have no other choice but using the Web or read
the very few articles & reviews published in some Iranian Daily
Papers and Magazines (mostly translated and of course with no
permission!).
While attending the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in October 2005, I had the
opportunity to have some fruitful talks with my friends at the
world’s leading World Music Magazine “Songlines” (bi-monthly),
Simon Broughton (Editor), Paul Geoghegan (Publisher and
Advertising Manager) and Jo Frost (Deputy Editor).
Our idea was to find a professional as well as a legal
solution to bring Songlines closer to the Iranian audience and
in the beginning we decided to dedicate a complete issue of our
monthly music magazine (Culture & Music) to the selected
articles and reviews of Songlines published in 2005 as a pilot
version.
Fortunately, everybody appreciated the idea immediately and right after
coming back to Iran the editorial team of Culture&Music started
to pick & select the articles published in Songlines (from issue
28 to 33) and Simon, Paul & Jo took the responsibility to get
the blessings from their article writers.
The Persian version of Songlines is now available at the
Kiosks and Bookshops. Those who want to know more about
Songlines, go to

Hermes Records' 5th Anniversary
Hermes Records got 5 years old (January 11, 2000). The basic idea
goes back in autumn 1999, but it started officially in January
2000 and the first release (Earth Whisper, M. Aligholi) went

artists and musicians who relied on our vision, all patient
friends, music enthusiasts & fans who

The
Nour Ensemble Album and Documentary
After
two years of hard work, the Nour Ensemble started
to record their first Album. Considering the atmosphere of the
music, Christophe Rezai (Composer and Founder
of Nour) decided to record the album in an ancient &
mystic place with a natural ambient. The 1700 year old Ardeshir
Babakan Castle (near Firouzabad, Fars Region) has been
chosen and the recordings began from September 14 and ended 5
days later. During the recordings, a complete crew of
Cinematographers (leaded by Mr. H. Payvar) helped us to
film a documentary among this event. Meanwhile the post
production of the Documentary is on schedule and the Music Album
is planned to be on the Market in December 2004.
Several unexpected problems were forcing the project not
to come to an end (difficult bureaucratic procedure for getting
permissions from related organizations, uninvited guests during
recordings like Snakes, ultra big Scorpions...!, strong Wind,
disturbing sounds of an Owl ...) but finally everything ended up
well.
The Nour Ensemble Team:
Christophe Rezai (Composer, Founder, Tenor,
Harmonium)
Saba Alizadeh (Kamancheh, Back Vocal)
Reza Asgarzadeh (Duduk, Flute, Bariton,
Traditional Drums)
Pierre Baranger (Tenor, Traditional Drums)
Pierre-Yves Binard (Bariton, Traditional
Drums, Percussions)
Ali Boustan (Oud, Shourangiz, Back Vocal)
Hamid Khosrowshahi (Bass Vocal)
Mostafa Mahmoodi (Kurdish & Iranian Chants,
Percussions)

Bazar
Blå Concert (Aftermath)
Tehran
- Niavaran Palace, May 26-28, 2004 (Open Air)
As
planned, the Bazar
Blå
concert took place in Tehran. During their
stay in Tehran (from May 22 till May 29) the band got the
opportunity to meet some Iranian musicians and also rehearse
where both sides found some common tunes to work on. Bazar
Blå members
found out that one of their tunes (based on Swedish folk music)
has some similarities with an old Iranian folk song (Dokhtare
Boyer Ahmadi) which directed them to play it on the opening
night on wednesday. The crowd got excited and the concert ended
in an Iranian ambient.
The clashes in two Holy Muslim Cities in Iraq (Kerbala
and Nadjaf) during May 25 & 26 caused the spiritual Leader
of Iran announce a National Mourning on Thursday May 27 in Iran.
All events in Iran unexpectedly got cancelled on that certain
day. More than 300 guests changed their tickets for Friday and
the rest got their refund.
The Friday performance on May 28 took place as
scheduled but not easily! First a major earthquake (6.2 on
Richter scale) just 60 km far from Tehran shocked the nation at
16h45 and many people went on the streets and an uncertainty got
spread. A huge traffic chaos occurred in Tehran but as the
Concert was in an Outdoor area, the spectators did not only
cancel their visit but were also pleased to be outside of their
homes for some reason to calm the stress by listening to Bazar
Blå's music.
During the concert, Bjorn dedicated one of their tunes to the
eventual victims of the earthquake and the 1100 spectators
responded with applause.
As a special gift for the final night, Bazar
Blå
invited two Iranian Artists on stage (Ali Boustan on Oud and Ali
Rahimi on Tombak) and Bjorn, Johan, Fredrik, Ali and
Ali performed the famous iranian folk song Dokhtare Boyer Ahmadi together.

Bazar
Blå in Concert
Tehran
- Niavaran Palace, May 27-29, 2004 (Open AIr)
The
swedish trio Bazar Blå
create their own, new folk music and call it Transglobal
Tripfolk.
1999 their debut album, Nordic City, was nominated as
"folk-music record of the year".
Bazar Blå
performed at WOMEX 2003
in Sevilla where we met Björn,
Johan and Fredrik. After some preliminary talks
and brain stormings we came to the conclusion to plan for a
concert in Tehran in spring 2004.
The idea of forming Bazar Bla started when Nyckelharpa player
(a
traditional, medieval
Swedish folk-instrument
remotely related to violin)
Johan Hedin spent a summer busking in Paris. A musical director from
EMI heard his fantastic playing and invited him to work with
singer, actor & model Milla Jovovich. Bass player Björn
Meyer was recruited to the band, which then spent two years
touring all over USA. Back in Sweden they found the perfect
percussionist, Fredrik
Gille, and formed Bazar Blå. Since then they have performed
on many major folk-music festivals and venues. Lately they have
toured Switzerland, Denmark, Scottland, Belgium, USA Lithuania
and Sweden.
